The Craft

Made by hand.
Row by row.

Kani weaving is one of the most technically demanding textile arts in the world. Each shawl is woven using dozens — sometimes over 150 — individual hand-held wooden bobbins called kanis, each loaded with a different colour thread.

The weaver follows a coded notation called the talim, building patterns directly into the fabric. No printing. No embroidery. The design is the weave itself.

6 to 18 months per shawl

One centimetre of a complex Jamawar can take a full day to weave. There is no shortcut.

📜

The talim — weaving's sheet music

A coded instruction system passed down through generations of master craftspeople.

🏔

Kanihama — the craft's heartland

The village of Kanihama in Kashmir's Budgam district has practised Kani weaving for 500+ years.

Why Kanishawls

Directly from the weavers

We work directly with master weavers in Kanihama and Srinagar. No agents, no middlemen, no compromise on authenticity.

🏅

GI Certified Authentic

Every shawl comes with Geographical Indication documentation confirming it was woven in the Kashmir Valley. The same legal protection as Champagne.

🏔

Direct Manufacturer

We are the manufacturers — not traders. We work directly with weaving families in Kanihama and Srinagar. Factory prices, full quality control.

🎨

500 Years of Design

Our designs follow the Mughal-era vocabulary — boteh, flowering plants, vine borders — executed by craftspeople who learned from their parents.

📦

Flexible Wholesale

Minimum orders from just 10 pieces. Custom designs and private label available for established buyers. Bulk pricing up to 500+ pieces.

🌍

Ships Worldwide

We serve buyers in 40+ countries across Europe, North America, the Gulf, and Asia. We handle all export documentation and customs requirements.

🤝

Ethical Sourcing

Every purchase directly supports weaving families who keep this 500-year-old craft alive. We pay fair wages and invest in the next generation.
